The Wolves Senior Men had their first game of the season, travelling away to Dunfermline to face off againt the Reign. The Wolves Div 1 team have a big squad this season, with a number of new squad members to the squad joining the returning members and some players stepping up from Division 2 from last year. Despite a squad of 14 the Wolves were only able to field 7 players due to work committments, weddings and coaching courses.
The game started with Dunfermline coming out really strong and pushing out an early lead of 22 to 9 at the end of the first quarter. The Reign squad pushed the ball, and shot the lights out. They played with confidence and looked to be the stronger team initially. The Wolves coach spoke to his team at the break and the Wolves came into the second quarter a different team. the Wolves defense lifted to last years standard and the Reign began to struggle to find baskets. On top of this the Wolves started to move the ball better and started getting open shots. The Wolves newest player Sean Hume hit four 3 point shots in the quarter. As well as this the Wolves became more agressive and got into the key to pick up some fouls and get free throws. The Wolves won this quarter 23 to 3 points and went into the half up by seven points.
The second half was a much tighter contest with the Wolves winning both quarters by only two points each. The Reign never gave up fighting and showed a massive imporvement from last year. The Wolves' Andy Sturrock played the game with a badly sprained ankle, however he made a real impact on the game with his usual rebounding and defense. Owen Cook had a great all around game with 9 points, 2 steals and 6 rebounds. Marc Dickson lead the rebounding game with 9. Sean Hume was the leading scorer with 25 points while having a 50% shooting average from behind the three point line.
The Wolves are up against the Boroughmuir Blaze this weekend, which will be another tough game.
