The Senior men have been off to a slow start this year with only one win in four games. However the Wolves form was well and truly on in their loss to the Edinburgh Lions, they just came up against a team as on form. They threw that game away with some silly mistakes, however they were determined to not let the season slip any further. On Saturday 24th November the Wolves were up against Heriot Watt University. In their one match up last season the Wolves had a great come from behind win against a tough athletic squad. Would this be a similar game?
Well the Wolves were up against it from the start, only having six players suit up for the game. A lot of guys were on shift and starting point guard Grant Dickson was on the last day of his Level 2 course (well done Grant for passing this). However the Wolves came out the more aggressive team which saw a great steal and converted basket from Sean Hume open the scoring. The Wolves continued to put the ball inside and move it around the perimeter in order to find the best shot and quickly pulled out to a 14 - 2 lead. However due to a number of unsuccessful offenses and some mistakes on defense the Wolves allowed the Uni team to get back into the game. The Wolves never relinquished their lead, however they failed to put their opponents away. At times the Wolves made a small run, only to let the Uni squad pull it back in. Marc Dickson and Sean Hume constantly put the ball in the basket during this stage of the game, while Andy Sturrock held it down on the defensive end, pulling down some key rebounds. The Wolves went into the half with a slim 8 point lead with a score of 31 - 23. In the second half the Wolves came out and played really good defense only allowing Heriot Watt to score nine points each period. The Wolves hustled for lose balls and scrambled for everything. One play saw Ben O'Connell run back to save a back court call, passing the ball to Andy Smyth, who quickly passed to Gavin Baxter for the score. Another play saw Sean Hume steal the ball in the open floor and score on the fast break. The Wolves pushed the lead out throughout the third quarter and started to really frustrate their opponents. By the time the fourth quarter came the Wolves had outpaced the Uni team, who at this stage looked tired. This was demonstrated by continuous fast breaks. One great fast break saw Andy Smyth grab a rebound, taking a couple of dribbles and finding Gavin Baxter wide open under the basket with a three quarter court one hand pass. The scoring was balanced throughout the team, with Sean Hume leading all scorers with 19 points. Marc Dickson and Gavin Baxter both finished with 16 points. Andy Smyth was the top rebounder with 10, and Andy Sturrock pulled down 8. The final score was 71 - 42 to the Wolves. Next up for the men is the Pleasance on Wednesday 28th November. Lets go Wolves!!!!! Comments are closed.
