The Senior men Division 1 squad traveled through the snow last night to face off against the Perth Phoenix in their Chairman's Cup semi final game. The Wolves squad has been left depleted due to a number of injuries to starting players Owen Cook and Marc Dickson, some members having work commitments and others working out of the country. The Wolves therefore fielded 6 players and looked to be the underdogs when warming up against a full Phoenix side.
The Wolves however came out with very strong defense and inspiring offense, finding the basket from long range time and again as they ran through all their plays, to take advantage of a switching defense that lead to our shooters being open. Sean Hume and Ben O'Connell found the basket from three point land time and again, much to the frustration of the good crowd there to support the home team. When the Wolves were not shooting from distance they attacked inside to get easy layups.
The referees were taking no nonsense from the players and two Wolves players, Sean Mitchell and Andy Sturrock found themselves in foul trouble early on. This meant that all players on the floor had to be really careful to not foul as the game went on, which was difficult as the Phoenix started driving to the basket in the second half, putting pressure on the Wolves.
The Wolves had an 11 point lead going into half time and they managed to keep a good lead throughout the rest of the game. Andy Smyth hit two baskets at the start of the third quarter to stretch the lead. the first a pull up jump shot and the second an easy layup off a pick and roll with Ben O'Connell. In the play Ben delivered a beautiful pass to Andy Smyth. This team play was on display through out the game, with the Wolves communicating well on defense and moving the ball well to get it to the open man. As the game went on Grant Dickson came into his game, finding his shot off the high screens that are prevalent in the Wolves offense. Grant also found the open man and controlled the game, showing maturity beyond his youth.
Sean Mitchell and Andy Sturrock both scored throughout the game, however Andy Sturrock fouled out at the end of the third quarter. Sean Hume and Andy Smyth lead the team with 20 points each, Ben O'Connell 15 points, Grant Dickson had 12 points, Sean Mitchell had 9 points and Andy Sturrock had 7 points. All players contributed to this historic win for the club as it sees them going into the Chairman's Cup final for the first time in club history.
We will put up details of the date and time of the final and look to get as much support as possible for this game.
Well done men, Go Wolves!!!!!
