U14 GIRLS SCOTTISH NATIONAL CUP
Wolves 40-37 ST.MIRREN WEST COLLEGE SCOTLAND
On Sunday the longest unbeaten streak in U14s Scottish basketball history is over after our girls led practically from tip-off to the final buzzer to turn back visiting St.Mirren 40-37 in the basketballscotland Game of the Week.
SWL conquered a semi-final spot in the inaugural U14s National Cup against all odds. Both teams went into the game with full rosters and no injury problems, but the star turned out to be the home team's defence. SWL worked the full game to hold St.Mirren 41 points below its season-long scoring average of 78 points.
Mili Bolatiki led the winners with 11 points, while surprise bench starter Erynn Legge added 9 points
and 5 assists. Ruth Allison paced the hosts to a 11-11 start that ballooned to 21-17 in the second
quarter, but basketballpaisley came back to 27-27 with one quarter left and 38-37 near the end of the game, but could not get closer.
An individual highlight for our team was Ruth Allison’s performance who was able to sign a
defensive double-double with 14 rebounds and 13 blocked shots. Not forgetting the extremely
powerful Rachel Crow improving after every single game this season.
With 27-27 at the scoreboard and one quarter to go it was time for Helen Walker and Abbie Cowan
to shut the door. Walker opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a strong drive. Huey got loose for a fastbreak, but SWL's Allison got just as open for an easy basket-plus-free throw and powered in another 2 points to make it 32-27.
With one minute to go, Hancock scored in close for Paisley before McLeod made a teardrop among
the centers at 38-37. It was our time, however a turnover gave the ball back to St Mirren and a final chance for the visiting team…
In an incredible defensive stance it was all or nothing, a brilliant second help effort of Roko Bolatiki finished with a steal and without losing a second she organized a fast break finished with the winning lay-up by Ruth Allison.
That’s the Scottish National Cup, the knock out competition. Our girls shocked the country and
ended Paisley’s unbelievable winning streak.
Believe it or not, our U14 Girls team is qualified for National Semi-Finals to be played no later
than 16th March. We are waiting for our rival, next Sunday City of Edinburgh Kats will host Tayside
Musketeers, the winning team will be our rival in the next round.
We keep on dreaming…..
